Larry Yates Announces Candidacy for
Ocean City Council

Ocean City, Md- One long time Ocean City resident made a surprise announcement that he will be running for the Ocean City council in November.
Larry Yates has been a full-time resident of the resort town since 2001, and prior to moving to Ocean City he held a career of public service.
Starting his career as a police officer in 1968 with Maryland State Police/Rockville Police, Larry worked hard and rose through the ranks over 25 years of police work where he retired as deputy chief of the Rockville police department.
After moving to Ocean City, MD, he continued to work in public safety, working part time with the town’s fire marshal’s office as the bonfire compliance inspector.
Yates spoke to us about why he wants to run for the position: “I can’t sit still. I enjoy helping the community and the town that we live in… My parents raised me to be involved and help people and I’ve always been a helper my entire career.”
When asked about what his platform would be, Yates emphasized that public safety will always be a top priority for him: “I am a big supporter and I fight for increased public safety, training, and accountability, and I want to ensure a dedicated team effort of our police and fire departments…”
In addition to focusing on public safety, Yates says that efforts need to continue to support the tourism industry in the town. Making sure that OC continues to be a family friendly destination for those on vacation.

Ocean City, MD (1/23/2024): Larry R. Yates, Ocean City resident of Montego Bay Community, is running for the Ocean City Council on a platform of CITY AND COMMUNITY TEAM!! We will work together to continue making Ocean City a wonderful place to live, work, and visit. Larry has several other platforms and priorities that he believes will accomplish the goals and visions of the City and our quality of life based on responsible government leadership and policies.
Larry was raised in Cecil County, Maryland, by hardworking, humble parents with high moral and ethical standards and a built-in desire to help others. This desire was engrained and instilled in him his entire life.
Larry is extremely proud of his lifelong career in law enforcement and community service. He began his career in 1968 with the Maryland State Police and Rockville City Police in Rockville, Maryland. Larry worked very hard and rose through the ranks to the position of Captain/Deputy Chief. He retired with 25 years of active service. During his tenure, he commanded all units and divisions of the department. He implemented many groundbreaking law enforcement patrol, investigative, crime-reducing, and community-oriented initiatives, which are still in effect today. He was honored to receive many prestigious commendations and awards, including Police Officer of the Year, on several occasions.
After retiring, he was Manager of Homeland Security, Anti-terrorism Task Force, post 9/11 with the American Trucking Associations in Alexandria, Virginia.
Larry continues to enjoy working in the public safety and service arena. He is a part-time Bonfire Compliance Inspector with the Ocean City Fire Marshal’s office; you may have seen him on the beach in the spring, summer, and fall seasons handling the Bonfire inspections.
It brings great pleasure to Larry that he and his wife Rebecca, daughter, and grandchildren have been visiting Ocean City since early childhood. They became part-time residents in 2001 and then full-time residents in 2016. They love living, working, and volunteering in Ocean City.
Larry appreciates the hard work of dedicated town employees who help make the day-to-day operations run smoothly and professionally. As an active and concerned citizen and supporter, Larry attends all Mayor and Council meetings and work sessions. He has learned much about the town government, interests, priorities, needs, and desires of all our communities, including the residential, business, and visitors.
Larry and his wife, Rebecca, currently reside in the Montego Bay Community.
If elected, Yates commits to improving the overall quality of life for property owners and visitors while maintaining sensible government and affordable, consistent tax rates. Larry is proud to promote the town and all its businesses positively and professionally to spur sustainable tourism growth and keep Ocean City “SOMEWHERE TO SMILE ABOUT” and a world-class destination.
